I have training and expertise in arbitration and mediation law, with considerable familiarity of the California Arbitration Act, Federal Arbitration Act, California’s Ethics Standards for Neutral Arbitrators and California’s mediator laws. Additionally, during my legal career, I acted as an arbitrator or mediator for well-over 100 times.
For most of my legal career, I was a personal injury trial attorney representing plaintiffs in state and federal court. I estimate I had over 500 jury, court and arbitration proceedings to conclusion. I have been a bar leader with many bar associations, including Los Angeles County Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, Business Trial Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and Trial Practice Inn of Court.
As an independent arbitrator and mediator, my fees are below market. Also, knowing the financial constraints on personal injury practitioners, I have a flat-rate for certain uninsured and underinsured motorist arbitrations.

After a 47-year career as a personal injury trial attorney, I retired from the active practice of law on June 30, 2015. I remain an active member of the State Bar of California (#43347). I write for legal publications and lecture on legal topics, primarily in the area of arbitrations, mediations and tort lien claims. I am an independent arbitrator, mediator, and discovery referee under my firm name, “Michael S. Fields, Esq., Arbitrator and Mediator Services.”
